An internship should be paying YOU….I don’t think most of us can truly afford the luxury of an unpaid summer.

I’m on financial aid, and can’t afford anything either. I feel your pain.
not the op but in a similar situation 12:44 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink |
you don’t feel the same pain…. you or your family aren’t giving 50k+ a year to this school on top of paying for everything else
Anonymous 7:06 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink
those on financial aid don’t have 50k+ per year to give, so they pay whatever large sum they can afford and often can’t “pay for everything else” just like some who do pay more

I’m sorry “not the op” but this is really insensitive. For families on financial aid, the burden of paying $10k or $20k a year, for example, is often just as hard for them (if not harder) than paying $50k a year is for other families. Please don’t assume families like mine have more disposable income since we’re not paying 50,000 per year. I assure you it’s quite the opposite.

For the commenter, not the original poster: You have to be kidding me….my family’s income is below the poverty line (think around $22,000 for a family of four) and so it isn’t even about nice “extras.” It’s about the fact that if anything goes wrong, i.e., I don’t find a summer job, or I have a medical problem, I have no cushion to fall back on. Wellesley gives me good financial aid and I know everyone is squeezed right now, but there still is a difference between those who qualify for aid and those who don’t. It’s just a difference between utter fear and having a little peace of mind.

@ not the op:
if we’re gonna play the generalization game, why don’t you go have yourself a nice little shopping spree to alleviate your misery.
Anonymous 7:15 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink
Guess what? My family’s total income is less than a year’s tuition. They still pay over 10% of their income for me to be here.
In conclusion: CRY MOAR.

Waahhhh, I’m a poor little rich girl whose “suffering” is so much greater than those awful financial aid dependents!
STFU, you stuck up little bitch.

I think what the OP means, is “there go any opportunities” aren’t lessons free even if you are on a fraction of financial aid? and wintersessions and summer schools too?
tried it 11:33 pm on March 8, 2010 Permalink |
no, lessons aren’t free. they are covered in part, though if you take them accompanied by some sort of class (e.g. music theory for piano lessons)

oh and try looking for an on-campus job. they’ll tell you that since you’re not on financial aid, they won’t be able to hire you. so there goes your chances of trying to afford the “extras”
Anonymous 3:34 am on March 9, 2010 Permalink |
dunno, babe, i’m not on financial aid at all and i got an on-campus job.
Anonymous 1:28 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink |
I’m on financial aid and can’t get an on campus job so I can’t afford anything extra and I feel guilty asking my parents for money because they already pay so much for me to go here
Anonymous 7:26 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink |
Hahahaha no.
AVI, for example, doesn’t care what your financial aid status is, and will pretty much hire anyone.
FinAid Savvy 12:47 pm on March 9, 2010 Permalink |
Financial Aid covers a certain percentage of your costs, so, for example, if you receive 75% financial aid for the fall and spring semester, you will also receive 75% towards Wintersession. Pretty sure it works the same way for summer school.

Summer School financial aid is handled differently and on a separate budget completely.
